SK telecom said it was offering 5G subscriptions from Friday.

But according to local media, SK heard that U.S. provider Verizon would also be launching soon.

The title of world's first was at risk.

But SK had given six Samsung 5G smartphones to Korean celebrities at a 5G preview event.

So, without notice, they activated the celebs 5G service.

Verizon launched two hours later in two cities where one 5G phone is on sale.

The Korean public won't be able to buy the new Samsung's until Friday.

Both companies say they're first.

Bragging rights aside, these are limited launches.

And most people won't be able to enjoy 5G's zippy speeds for months or even years… depending on what phone you use.
