Talks at DMZ target reduction of guards, weapons in border area

Military talks were held at the demilitarized zone or DMZ today (Tuesday) as North and South Korea work to demilitarize their border. The United Nations Command was also at the talks and must agree with any plan to reduce guards or remove weapons along the buffer zone.

The meeting was the first in a series of talks between North and South Korea and the United Nations Command.

They discussed an ongoing operation to remove mines from the Joint Security Area, the only spot along the DMZ where negotiations are held.

They also discussed the reduction of guards and weapons from that area.

Seoul and Pyongyang agreed on the plans last month in an effort to maintain peace efforts.

According to South Korea, U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo has expressed "discontent" with the deal.

And the U.S. leads the UN Command.
