LANDMARK GIG ECONOMY DECISION IN UK

In the UK, a plumber has won a legal battle which could have major implications for the so-called 'gig economy'.

That's the part of the economy which relies on freelance workers with short-term contracts - often paid on the basis of each 'gig', whether that's a food delivery, such as Deliveroo, or a car journey in a lift-hailing app like Uber.

The Supreme Court in the UK has ruled in favour of Gary Smith - a plumber who launched a fight for working rights, even though he was technically self-employed.
