ZIMBABWE AWAITS MILITARY'S NEXT MOVE

President Robert Mugabe is thought to remain under house arrest in Zimbabwe as the country awaits the military's next move.

The Southern African Development Community regional bloc is holding emergency talks to discuss the situation.

Troops and armoured vehicles were deployed at parliament and other key buildings in the capital Harare on Wednesday.

The ruling ZANU-PF party had become split over who might succeed 93 year-old President Mugabe and the military insisted it was not carrying out a coup - but moving to halt a 'purge'.

Opposition politician Tendai Biti says that's not true.
