North Korean soldier shot in rare defection across the DMZ

A North Korean soldier has been shot crossing the Demilitarized Zone or DMZ as he defected to the south.

Around 1000 people defect from the north to South Korea every year.

But as our correspondent Giles Gibson explains, this marks a rare defection in the heavily protected area of the DMZ:
