US Senate votes to impose new Russia sanctions

US Senators have voted overwhelmingly to impose fresh sanctions on Russia over its alleged meddling in the 2016 presidential election.

Senators also voted 97-2 to set up a process by which Congress can block any attempts by the President to scale back the sanctions.

The new sanctions - which must still be approved by the House of Representatives - target Russians who have supplied weapons to the Assad regime in Syria, among other categories.

Republican Senator John McCain said Russia had to pay a price for its actions.
