US sanctions Syria over chemical weapons attack

The United States is imposing sanctions on 271 Syrian scientists and officials it accuses of being involved in the production of chemical weapons.

Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin (pron: Mi-nu-shin) announced the sanctions in Washington DC, three weeks after the Assad regime was accused of dropping sarin gas on civlians, killing an estimated 86 people.

The punishments include travel bans, a seizure of assets, and a ban on US organisations and individuals from doing business with those targeted by the sanctions.
