Former New Zealand politician David Shearer has given his first briefing to the United Nations Security Council in his new role as the head of the UN's South Sudan mission.
Shearer warned that there has been an intensification of the conflict over the last few months, and opposition groups and the government are planning upcoming offensives.
The former Labour MP took over the position earlier this year, and is tasked with helping the world's newest nation that has been embroiled in a three-year civil war.
The Security Council has considered an arms embargo on the country, but has so far been unable to agree whether it would help reduce the violence.
David Shearer said the humanitarian situation had deteriorated and the South Sudanese were struggling to survive.
