Labour promises to guarantee rights of EU citizens on day one in power

Britain's opposition Labour party have promised to unilaterally guarantee the rights of EU nationals living in the UK should they win the upcoming general election in June.

In Labour's first major policy statement of the campaign,  shadow Brexit secretary Sir Keir Starmer said a Labour government would  scrap the Conservative government's Brexit plans and focus on a mutually beneficial deal prioritizing jobs and workers' rights.

The Conservative party says  a deal on EU nationals can only be done at part of a reciprocal agreement to guarantee the rights of UK nationals living in the European Union.

Sir Keir said EU nationals would be assured they could stay in the UK on day one of a Labour government.
