SNP, CONSERVATIVES SPAR OVER REFERENDUM

The Scottish National Party says UK Prime Minister Theresa May is 'running scared' of a new referendum on independence.

Mrs May has rejected calls for an independence vote by spring 2019, insisting it would be wrong before Brexit is finalised.

SNP demands for a fresh referendum are dominating as both it and the Conservative Party hold their spring conferences.

Theresa May insists her priority is to work on a deal with the EU that works for all of the UK.

SNP MP Stewart Hosie says his leader Nicola Sturgeon isn't urging an immediate vote.
