British Prime Minister Theresa May has formally given notice to the European Union of the UK's intention to quit the bloc.
Theresa May made a statement in the House of Commons at the same time as the UK's ambassador the EU delivered a letter to European Council President Donald Tusk.
The triggering of Article 50 of the Lisbon treaty, the mechanism to leave the EU, begins a two year deadline in which the divorce settlement must be agreed, including complex issues relating to borders, immigration the status of nationals living overseas and the final monetary bill.
Prime Minister Theresa May said leaving the EU was an historic moment.
