Talks are getting underway in Mexico between US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, US Homeland Security Secretary John Kelly and members of Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto's administration.
The visit comes the day after the US Department of Homeland Security vowed to step up deportations of undocumented immigrants.
The meetings could be tense, with Mexico's foreign minister telling the press earlier Wednesday that his country does not have to accept provisions imposed by other countries, that are not in Mexico's interests.
From Washington, Andrea Arenas reports.
