Britain's most senior police officer to be a woman

Britain's most senior police officer is to be a woman for the first time in its 188 year history.

Cressida Dick, a former Acting Deputy Commissioner of the Metropolitan Police is taking over as the head of Scotland Yard for a five year term.

Her appointment is not without controversy.   Ms Dick was in charge of a flawed police operation that saw the shooting dead of a young Brazilian man mistaken for a suicide bomber after London's 2005 terror attacks.

Ms Dick, who takes charge at a time when Britain's terror threat level stands at severe, meaning an attack is highly likely,  said she was thrilled and humbled by the appointment.
