White House Suggests Russia Behind US Election Interference

The Obama administration has suggested that Vladimir Putin was directly in interfering with the US election.

The White House deputy national security advisor, Ben Rhodes, said the Russian president's likely to have been aware of and involved with cyber intrusions.

It comes as NBC News has quoted two anonymous senior officials as saying that the hacking began as a vendetta against Hillary Clinton, then became an effort to discredit American political processes and split off important US allies.

White House press secretary Josh Earnest said that President Elect Donald Trump's team should take the investigations seriously - and rejected suggestions the administration was trying to de-legitimise the incoming leader:
