Italian government asks parliament for approval to raise national debt to save struggling banks

The government in Italy has applied parliament to borrow more than 20 billion dollars to prop up its faltering banking system.

The move will need parliamentary approval but the government hopes it will be able to save Italy's third largest bank with the loan.
