Ahmad al-Faqi al-Mahdi becomes first person to plead guilty at the International Criminal Court

Islamist militant Ahmad al-Faqi al-Mahdi has become the first person to ever plead guilty at the International Criminal Court in The Hague.

He admitted to the destruction of cultural sites in Mali as part of a rebel faction in the country which destroyed 9 shrines and a mosque in the capital Timbuktu in 2012.
