US Refuses to Criticize Turkey Crack Down

Turkey's President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has declared a three month long state of emergency in the wake of last week's failed coup.

Turkey's parliament has now suspended a human rights pact with Europe and provided the government with broad powers to pursue those it accuses of supporting the coup attempt.

A wide range of academics, judges and human rights organizers have been detained.

Questioned by reporters, US State Department Spokesman John Kirby is refusing to say the  actions are "excesssive"...
