A Chinese cargo ship was the first boat to official make its way through the renovated Panama Canal, after more than $5 billion in renovations.
The canal was originally built more than 100 years ago under U.S. leadership and revolutionized the shipping industry.
In an interview with American Public Broadcasting's the PBS NewsHour, David Brancaccio of the radio show Marketplace explained why the Panama canal needs to be even bigger today.
