Farage hails Brexit victory, calls for Independence Day holiday

The leader of Britain's UK Independence Party has called for June 23rd to be declared a holiday and celebrated as the country's Independence Day following the historic vote for a so-called Brexit.

Britain has voted to leave the European Union after a record turnout of nearly 72 per cent of eligible voters.   The Leave campaign won with 52 per cent of the vote, against the Remain camp's 48 per cent.

The Leave camp  had campaigned on a message that Britain would prosper outside the European Union, with an ability to control its own immigration levels,  borders and negotiate it's own trade deals.

Nigel Farage,  who was not part of the official Leave campaign,  says his movement had won the support of the people.
