Draft agreement reached on ceasing hostilities in Syria

Russia and the United States have reached a draft agreement to cease hostilities in Syria by Friday.

Syria has been in chaos, with Russia backing President Assad, the US backing anti-government rebels, and both sides supposedly fighting the self-declared Islamic State group. Hundreds of thousands of Syrians have died and millions have been displaced.

White House spokesman Josh Earnest acknowledged to reporters in Washington that ceasing the violence might still be difficult to achieve.

There is still distrust between the multiple forces in the country, but Mr Earnest said it was important that the parties keep their promises.
