French officials say a seven-hour raid on a flat in a Paris suburb is now over, with two people killed.
One of them was a female suicide bomber who blew herself up.
Seven arrests have also been made.
The raid was targeting Abdelhamid Abaaoud, the alleged mastermind of Friday's attacks on Paris which left 129 people dead.
His whereabouts remain unclear.
French President Francois Hollande says aircraft carrier Charles de Gaulle is now en route to boost military operations against the Islamic State in Syria.
Sam Jones, defence and security editor at the Financial Times, says if President Hollande and French allies want to make significant headway against ISIS, new strategies may be required.
