US sticks to strategy against Islamic State despite losses

The American government says it won't change its military strategy against Islamic State despite the group making significant gains in Iraq and Syria.

Islamic State is now estimated to control around half of Syria, including the archaeological site of Palmyra, and has taken the important Iraqi city of Ramadi.

America's strategy is to train local fighters and provide air support, but it won't commit more ground troops. State Department spokeswoman Marie Harf says there have been setbacks but the President is sticking to current policy.
