US defends Cuba terror list decision

The US State Department is defending President Obama's decision to remove Cuba from the U.S. list of state sponsors of terrorism.

A State Department spokesperson said Cuba has given the U.S. specific, written assurances that it is not doing anything to support terrorism around the world.

On Tuesday, the White House announced President Obama would ask Congress to removed Cuba from the list as part of an ongoing effort to normalize relations between the two nations.

State Department spokesperson Jeff Rathke said the world is a different place now than when Cuba was originally placed on the list.
