Fresh migrant boat distress calls

Fresh rescue operations have been launched in response to distress calls from migrant boats in the Mediterranean.

It follows the capsizing of a boat on Sunday en route from Libya with hundreds of migrants on board.

European Union ministers have been discussing the issue at talks in Luxembourg.

Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi has called for more help from the EU, with Italy the destination for many of the migrant vessels leaving Libya.

It's thought 1600 migrants have died attempting the crossing this year.

UK Foreign Secretary Philip Hammond believes the EU must rapidly agree a response to the growing crisis.
