The European Union has accused the internet search giant Google of abusing its dominant position to favour its own products.
The US internet giant which handles around 90 per cent of European online searches will first face a charge of directing users unfairly towards its shopping results - but the case may be broadened out to encompass its entire operation.
Google has been under investigation for the past five years on this matter. The company said it strongly disagreed with the allegations and looked forward to defending itself.
The EU's competition commissioner is Margrethe Vestager.
