Just hours before Israelis go to the polls, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has declared that if he is re-elected, there will not be an independent Palestinian state.
Just over five years ago, he endorsed the idea, but in the last year allowed U.S. brokered talks come to nothing and has continued to allow Jewish settlements in regions claimed by the Palestinian Authority.
Back in Washington, White House spokesman Josh Earnest said the American position remains unchanged.
