Police in Paris say at least 12 people have been killed by gunmen who attacked the offices of the satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo.
The magazine's editorial meeting was reportedly underway at the time of the attack.
Reports say as many as three gunmen may have been responsible, and they escaped the scene.
French President Francois Hollande called the attack "exceptionally barbaric" amid reports that the gunmen asked for the magazine's cartoonists by name.
France's threat level has been raised to the highest possible.
