Dzhokhar Tsarnaev (joh-kar sar-nie-yev) appeared in U.S. federal court in Boston for a pre-trial hearing ahead of planned January 2015 proceedings on his role in the April 2013 attack at the finish line to the Boston Marathon.
Three people died and 260 were injured - many losing limbs - when two homemade bombs exploded at the end of the famous race.
The Tsarnaev brothers, the alledged masterminds, then went on a violent cross-town chase.
