UK REJECTS BARROSO ON EU

Downing Street is rejecting claims by European Commission president Jose Manuel Barroso that Britain could be making an 'historic mistake' if it moves towards EU exit.

Outgoing Commission President Barroso is in the UK, insisting the country would have 'zero' influence if it does leave the European Union.

Prime Minister David Cameron says he will reform the EU and then hold a referendum on membership of it if he wins the UK general election.

It's also reported he is formulating plans to limit EU migration - which Brussels says would be illegal.

UK correspondent Olly Barratt says the Conservative leader has set himself a complicated task.
