The Arctic: the Last Global Frontier

The underwater discovery of one of the ill-fated ships from the 1845 Franklin Expedition in the cold wastes of Canada's Arctic north is a success for Canada's strategy to assert its sovereignty over the Northwest Passage, which has recently become navigable to commercial shipping thanks to the effects of climate change.

 

But, as Tim Exton reports from Seattle, some of the world's most powerful nations are also staking claims to strategic and commercial interests in the region.
