NATO military alliance exercises involving 1300 troops are starting around the Western Ukrainian city of Yaroviv.
Personnel from 15 NATO member states, including 200 US soldiers will take part in the drills.
It's the first time US troops have been on the ground in Ukraine since Russia's annexation of Crimea in March.
