US announces fresh border policies aimed at curbing migration

US President Joe Biden has signed his most restrictive immigration policy to date, shutting down asylum requests at the country's southern border until claims fall below a certain threshold.

The executive order will see asylum petitions halted if crossings exceed a daily average of 2,500 people over the course a week. There will be some exceptions, including for unaccompanied children and humanitarian situations.

The move is an effort to prove to American voters that the President can be tough on illegal immigration — as his rival for the Oval Office Donald Trump vows mass deportations, putting the issue at the centre of his campaign and suggesting that immigration is "poisoning the blood" of America.

From Washington, Benji Hyer reports.

Trump and RNC raise $141m in May
