CHINA INCREASES MILITARY PATROLS NEAR TAIWAN

Taiwan's top security official says China is running "joint combat readiness patrols" near the island every seven to 10 days as part of a multifront effort designed to pressure the self-governed island.

Taiwan claims it is part of a 'carrot and stick' approach to pressure incoming president William Lai Ching-te in the run-up to his inauguration on May 20.

India conducts first flight of missile that can carry multiple warheads

A day after Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced the first successful test of the country's domestically manufactured missile,

defence experts say the project is specifically aimed at bolstering its nuclear deterrence against China.

India criticised for adopting changed citizenship rules ahead of polls

The Indian government has announced rules to implement the Citizenship Amendment Act, just weeks before the country goes to the polls.

The law allows Indian citizenship for non-Muslim refugees from neighbouring countries. Experts say the fact that it leaves out Muslims who also face persecution in neighbouring regions - like the Rohingyas in Myanmar - goes against India's secular identity.

IAEA chief begins Japan visit

The head of the International Atomic Energy Agency is visiting Japan for a progress report on the discharge of treated nuclear wastewater into the Pacific Ocean. 


Japan began a 30-year release of more than a million tonnes of treated, radioactive water used to cool the wrecked Fukushima nuclear plant in August.

Biden's budget: Higher taxes on the rich, childcare and education for the poor

Former Trump aide Peter Navarro ordered to report to prison
