Nigeria to Abolish English as Language of Instruction in Primary schools

Former Chinese leader Jiang Zemin dies aged 96

China's former leader Jiang Zemin has died at the age of 96 from multiple organ failure and leukemia, according to the state-run Xinhua news agency.

He came to power after the 1989 Tiananmen Square crackdown and oversaw a period of swift economic growth that included China's admission to the World Trade Organisation in 2001.

Alfred Wu is an Associate Professor at Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy at the National University of Singapore.

He was a reporter in China when it joined the WTO and says Jiang Zemin's decision led to the country's subsequent economic rise.

HSBC to close quarter of UK branches
