US alcohol-related deaths up by 25 per cent during pandemic

The number of alcohol-related deaths in the US have increased by 25 per cent during the pandemic.


A report from the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism found that the number of such deaths from causes like liver disease and accidents was up by a quarter in 2020 over the previous year.

White House: Biden will unveil more sanctions against Russia during Europe trip

The White House says President Biden will unveil fresh sanctions against Russia and tighten existing measures when he visits NATO and European leaders later this week.


He'll also visit US troops serving in Poland, and meet Ukrainian refugees who have fled the conflict.


National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan told reporters at the White House that President Biden plans to use his trip to Europe to underscore international resolve against Russia's war.

Deadly tornados tear through Texas, Oklahoma

Clean-up crews in Texas and Oklahoma are starting to wade through massive storm damage after multiple deadly tornados touched down Monday night, destroying homes and businesses.

Some 50,000 people were without power on Tuesday morning.
