India to increase vaccination sites as turnout lags

India says it will increase the number of its COVID-19 vaccination sites drastically amid concerns about the speed of vaccine coverage in the country.

It's been one month since India started vaccinating its frontline and healthcare workers.

So far it has inoculated 9 million people - but has a long way to go to meet its final target of vaccinating 300 million Indians by August.

Australia – Government appoints Minister to oversee rape allegations.

The Australian government has asked Liberal backbencher Celia Hammond to oversee an enquiry, after a former staffer revealed she'd been raped in a ministers office two years ago.


The opposition has been vocal in its criticism, saying the investigation needs to be independent of the government.

Millions without power in Texas as freezing storm hits swathes of the US.

Hong Kong government expected to approve Sinovac vaccine

The Hong Kong government is expected to approve China's Sinovac vaccine, after a panel of local health experts gave unanimous backing to the jab.

The panel says Sinovac's latest trial data is good enough for public use, without waiting for the endorsement of the World Health Organisation.

Former US President Donald Trump has launched a blistering attack on the Republican leader in the Senate, Mitch McConnell.


Last week, Senator McConnell voted to acquit Donald Trump at his impeachment trial, but then made it clear he believes the former President was entirely responsible for the deadly assault on the US Capitol building last month.

Prisoners on Hunger strike in Ethiopi

A court in Ethiopia has allowed prisoners who were on hunger strike to be taken to a private hospital after medical personnel said their situation was deteriorating.

 

The prisoners are from the Oromo Federalist Congress,  an opposition party from the Prime Minister's ethnic group that has openly challenged his rule.
