PARLIAMENTARY COMMITTEE CRITICISES UK IMPORTED INFECTIONS REPONSE

Senior lawmakers say the UK government made a mistake by not catching "imported infections" from other European countries, earlier in the coronavirus pandemic.

The Home Affairs select committee, made up of MPs from multiple parties, says 10,000 travellers with coronavirus entered the country before quarantine rules were introduced.

COVID-19 has killed over 46,000 people in the UK, and its Office for National Statistics says England's suffered the highest level of excess deaths - so far - of any country in Europe.

UK OFFERS HELP TO LEBANON AFTER MAJOR EXPLOSION

The UK has joined other countries in offering support to Lebanon after an explosion killed at least a hundred people and destroyed parts of its capital city, Beirut.

Lebanon's president, Michel Aoun, says nearly three thousand tonnes of ammonium nitrate exploded at the port.

The blast shattered buildings and injured thousands.

India's COVID cases continue to rise as states ramp up testing

COVID-19 cases in India continue to rise at a fast pace as the country moves into the third phase of reopening the economy.

India reported more than 52,000 cases of the novel coronavirus in the last 24 hours.

This took the country's tally to over 1.9 million cases, according to the data released by Union Health Ministry

Congolese Shot in Rwanda

UK oil company BP sees record losses

UK oil giant BP, one of the largest oil companies in the world, has reported a record $6.7bn loss, as energy demand plummets amid the coronavirus pandemic. 


The second quarter loss was partly a result of the firm's decision to wipe $6.5bn off the value of oil and gas exploration assets back in June in light of the impact of COVID-19.

Curfew imposed in Indian administered Kashmir

The Indian government has imposed a two-day curfew in Kashmir ahead of the one year anniversary of the revocation of the region's special status.

On August 5 last year, India converted Kashmir- India's only Muslim majority state- into a territory governed by the federal government in Delhi. Kashmir is governed in parts by India and Pakistan but claimed in full by both.
