Russia postpones Victory Day parade

Vladimir Putin has announced the postponement of the biggest event of the Russian calendar - the Victory Day parade. With Russia's coronavirus cases exceeding 28,000, President Putin says the risks are too high to hold a big gathering. Julia Chapman reports from Moscow.

China's Economy Declines for First Time in Decades

China's economy shrank by 6.8% in the first quarter, bringing an end to a near half-century of growth.

Millions of Americans without government checks because of glitches

Millions of Americans are yet to receive their stimulus checks from the government because of glitches in the system.


The money - part of a $2 trillion financial relief package - was supposed to arrive in people's bank accounts on Wednesday but several million people are still waiting.

Small Business Relief Fund Out of Money

A 350 billion dollar relief fund for small businesses hurt by the coronavirus is out of money. 

The Small Business Administration is not accepting any more lenders or applications. 

And as Rachel Silverman reports, the depletion of the fund's resources is set to launch a partisan fight over the shape of additional relief funding.

UK LOCKDOWN EXTENDED

The UK's coronavirus lockdown will remain in place for at least another three weeks.

Announcing the extension, Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab said that Britain still doesn't have the infection rate as far down as it needs to relax the measures.

Tanzania’s COVID-19 cases jump to 94

UK refusing to extend Brexit transition period, despite coronavirus

The UK will not extend the Brexit transition period, according to the British government's chief negotiator. 

 

On Thursday, David Frost tweeted that the phase will conclude on 31st December this year, and if the EU requests an extension, the UK will say no.

5.2m new U.S. unemployment claims in last week

99-year-old British war veteran raises millions for the NHS

A 99-year-old war veteran has walked 100 laps of his garden to raise more than £12m ($15m) for the UK's national health service.

 

Captain Tom Moore originally wanted to raise £1,000 for NHS Charities Together by completing the challenge before his 100th birthday.

 

But he smashed his target after about 620,000 people made donations to his fundraising page.

Germany becomes latest country to begin to release lockdown

Germany has announced it will start easing lockdown measures, with some shops under a certain size allowed to reopen next week.

Schools can reopen on May 4th, but bars and restaurants will remain closed.  Mass gatherings banned until at least August 31st

668 sailors test positive for the coronavirus in French aircraft carrier group

More than 660 sailors who were crew members either on-board France's sole aircraft carrier or other ships in her battle group have tested positive for the coronavirus.

It comes after the outbreak was confirmed at sea and the ships have now returned to port.

The UK is expected to confirm a three week extension later (Thursday) to its coronavirus lockdown.

The government has already said it's too early to ease lockdown measures which have been in place over three weeks.

UK scientific advisers believe the country is reaching the peak of its outbreak, but want to ensure it has passed before the strictest social distancing rules are relaxed in any way.

China: Imported Cases Drop But Local Transmissions Rise

China saw a drop in imported cases on cronavirus on Thursday but locally transmitted infections rose.

New asymptomatic cases increased also to 64, compared to 57 a day earlier.
