EU leaders have failed to agree on who should run the European Union's big institutions. 

A new summit has been scheduled for next Sunday.

EU climate change goal blocked at European Council summit

An EU climate change goal to reach net zero emissions by 2050 has been blocked at the European Council summit. 

A unanimous decision was needed by the 28 member states in order for the proposal to pass. 

But four countries vetoed the plan saying it would hurt their coal-dependent economies.

Thousands of Georgians try to storm parliament as anti-Russia protests erupt

Thousands of Georgians have tried to storm their parliament after a Russian MP was allowed to make a speech from inside. Riot police have fired tear gas and repelled the protesters from breaking through the gates, as Dan Ashby reports.

Boris Johnson and Jeremy Hunt to face run-off for UK leader

Either former UK foreign Secretary Boris Johnson or current UK foreign Secretary Jeremy Hunt will become the UK's next Prime Minister, with that decision now firmly in the hands of some 160 thousand UK Conservative party members.


It comes after several rounds of voting by Conservative MPs to whittle candidates down to just two.


Environment Secretary Michael Gove missed out on the runoff by just two votes.

UN Human Rights Commissioner to Venezuela

The United Nations' top human rights official is in Venezuela for separate meetings with President Nicolas Maduro and Opposition leader Juan Guaido — the two men locked in a power struggle for control of that country. 

Michelle Bachelet's predecessor was denied access to Venezuela  for criticising what he said was the government's refusal to recognise a humanitarian crisis.

Trump warns Iran over US drone attack

EU hopes Iran-US tensions will ease

The European Union's foreign policy chief has said the bloc will do what it can to ease tensions between the US and Iran.

Indian city of Chennai runs out of water

The southern Indian city of Chennai, home to more than 8.5 million people, is grappling with a severe water crisis after its four main reservoirs have run completely dry.

Chennai is one of 21 cities that a government think-tank warned last year could run out of groundwater by 2020.

DRC VIOLENT ETHNIC CLASHES

More than 300,000 people have been displaced following inter-ethnic violence between Hema herder and Lendu farming communities in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

 

The UN Refugee Agency says people are fleeing attacks and counter-attacks as both communities form self-defense groups to carry out revenge killings.
