According to Yonhap News, China sent several tour buses across the bridge to mark the opening.
China is North Korea's main economic benefactor.
Under international sanctions, most goods are banned from entering or exiting North Korea.
So it's unclear how the two countries plan to operate the new border checkpoint.
The opening comes amid stalled talks between North Korea and the U.S. on creating a nuclear-weapons free Korean Peninsula.
South Korean President Moon Jae-in visits Washington this week to try and convince Pres. Trump to continue talks with Kim.

US Designates Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps as Terrorist Organization
US President Donald Trump has designated Iran's elite Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps as a foreign terrorist organization.
It's the first time the US has named a part of another country's government as such a threat.

The head of South Korea's flag carrier and largest airline, Korean Air, has died.

Korean Air says Cho died at a hospital in Los Angeles.
The airline didn't give any other details about the 70-year-old chairman's death.
Recently Cho's leadership had been overshadowed by legal troubles.
He was on trial for corruption.
But it was family scandals that dominated headlines.
In 2014, one of his daughters was arrested for forcing a Korean Air flight to return to its gate after she was served nuts in a bag… and not on a plate.
The infamous incident became known as 'nut rage.'
