Moon strikes positive tone on N. Korea in New Year's address

South Korean President Moon Jae-in predicts a second summit between leader Kim Jong-un and President Trump is imminent. And the next meeting, Moon believes, will produce concrete goals.

In his first address to South Koreans this year, President Moon Jae-in focused on the economy.

Namely, how he plans to narrow the gap between the haves and have nots and stick to wage hikes to spur growth.

But his annual new year's press conference quickly drifted to North Korea.

Moon said he believes Kim Jong-un and President Trump will meet soon, seeing as Kim just visited Chinese President Xi Jinping.

Moon also said Kim and global leaders share the same understanding of 'denuclearization.'

But last month North Korea strongly suggested its vision of a nuclear free Korean Peninsula includes the removal of all U.S. military forces the region.

Moon added Pyongyang can't act alone. The U.S., he said, also needs to make concessions in negotiations.

MAY REACHES OUT TO LABOUR MPS OVER BREXIT

UK Prime Minister Theresa May is reaching out to some opposition Labour MPs to try and win support for the vote on her Brexit deal on Tuesday.

She's considering backing extra protections for workers and environmental standards.

But Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn says a UK general election is the only way to break the Brexit deadlock, with Britain due to leave the EU in March.

Mrs May is widely expected to lose Tuesday's vote and will then be required to set out her Plan B within days.

Labour MP Alison McGovern says new options are needed urgently.

Defectors call for safety of missing N. Korean diplomat

North Korean defectors in Seoul are calling for the governments of Italy and South Korea to protect a North Korean diplomat who has gone missing. Pyongyang's envoy in Rome, Jo Song-gil, and his wife haven't been seen since early November.

Bruce Harrison reports from Seoul.

NAT: group chanting (Korean)

'Jo Song-gil, be strong' a group chants.

They're members of a coalition demanding the safety of North Korean Jo Song-gil.

Jo was North Korea's acting ambassador to Italy.

But he and his wife's whereabouts are now unknown.

South Korea media report Jo defected and is seeking asylum in the West.

But those reports are unconfirmed.

Former North Korean diplomat Thae Yong-ho defected in 2016 to South Korea.

He believes Jo should join him in Seoul.

SOT: Thae Yong-ho (English)

"We should tell to North Korean citizens, that South Korea, the Republic of Korea, is their motherland. And Korea would welcome any North Korean citizens who want to come to this country."

The coalition is concerned the government in Seoul is unsure about receiving a high-profile refugee.

Defections to South Korea are a thorny issue in inter-Korean politics.

And President Moon has avoided the topic in his diplomatic outreach to Kim Jong-un.

UK MPs RESUME BREXIT DEBATE AHEAD OF VOTE

UK MPs are resuming a debate on Theresa May's Brexit deal with Brussels, ahead of a crunch vote on it next week.

She's also set out further proposals for Northern Ireland which she hopes will convince more MPs to back it.

But Mrs May is widely expected to lose Tuesday's vote, and some MPs in Parliament are trying to use legislation to force her government away from a No Deal Brexit as the default option.

The Prime Minister says she's not only talking to EU leaders about assurances on the controversial Irish backstop to ease concerns.
