Trump blocks takeover of American computer chip maker

President Donald Trump has blocked Singapore-based Broadcom's proposed multi-billion dollar takeover of rival US chipmaker Qualcomm on grounds of national security.

It's another example of the measures he is willing to take to promote his administration's increasingly protectionist stance.

Austin Bombings Possible Hate Crimes

Police in Texas are investigating a series of deadly package bombs that they say are related. 

They're treating the explosions in the state capital of Austin as possible hate crimes.

UN investigator warns of fresh offensive in Myanmar

A United Nations investigator has told the world body's Human Rights
Council that new military offensives have been reported in Myanmar.

A new report issued by the UN states there's growing evidence to
suggest a genocide on Rohingya Muslims.

Authorities in the country deny the claim but UN officials want to see
prosecutions and for cases to be taken up by the International
Criminal Court.

Ethiopian Military Mistakenly Kills 9 Civilians

The Ethiopian military says at least nine civilians were killed in the southern part of the country after officers acted on faulty intelligence.


At least 12 others were injured in the military operation targeting insurgent militants in Oromia Regional State.

40 dead in Kathmandu Airport crash

A Bangladeshi plane crashed at Nepal's Tribhuvan International Airport while attempting a landing.

Dozens of people have died and rescue operations are underway. There were 71 people on board including four crew members.

comedy legend Sir Ken Dodd who has died aged 90.

SAP appoints new African director after admitting 'misconduct' in South Africa

German software company SAP [PRONOUNCED BY SPELLING OUT THE LETTERS] announced it has hired new managing director for Africa, as it faces continued questions about its past dealings with companies linked to the Gupta family.


Last week the company admitted that it had paid over one hundred million Rand to intermediaries in order to win lucrative contracts with state owned enterprises.

KEN DODD DIES AT 90

British comedian Sir Ken Dodd has died at the age of 90.

He'd recently spent six weeks in hospital with a chest infection.

Sir Ken had been a comedian since the 1950s, and was well known for his long stand-up shows which sometimes lasted for hours.

In addition to his comic career on stage and screen, he also released some of the best-selling songs of the 1960s.

He received a knighthood at Buckingham Palace in 2017.

9 trekkers killed in forest fire in Southern India

Nine people were killed and 21 others rescued after a sudden forest fire was reported in the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu.

At least two dead in NYC helicopter crash

At least two people have died after helicopter went down in the East River of New York City.

Three passengers are in a critical condition in hospital after being pulled out of the water by rescue divers on Sunday night.

The New York City fire department said the pilot managed to free himself but commissioner Daniel Nigro said it was much harder to get the 5 passengers out.

India-France sign bilateral agreements worth $16 billion

French President Emmanuel Macron is on a four-day official visit to India- his first since assuming power.

He's held bilateral talks with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the two nations have agreed to enhance cooperation in the fields of nuclear energy, trade, space, education and sustainable development.

The biggest takeaway from the visit has been movement in the Jaitapur nuclear plant deal that has been languishing for nearly a decade now.
