Former head of US intelligence says Russia scandals worse than Watergate

America's former top intelligence official has joined criticism of President Donald Trump, describing investigations into Russian influence as being worse than Watergate.

James Clapper, the former head of National Intelligence, made the comments to journalists in Australia. As our Washington correspondent John Clarke reports, it adds to the growing mistrust of  Mr Trump by the US intelligence community.

Mexico: prison riot leaves at least four dead

Four people have died and another six have been wounded in a prison riot that broke out in the northern Mexican state of Tamaulipas. 

According to authorities, two of the victims were state police officers, a third one was a prison security guard, and an inmate also lost his life.

US Senate Intelligence hearing under way, Director of National Intelligence to face questions amid new Trump / FBI reports


The Director of National Intelligence Daniel Coats is currently testifying in front of Congress, after a Washington Post report that US President Donald Trump tried to enlist him to get the intelligence chief to convince then FBI Director James Comey to back off the Russia investigation.

Mr Comey was fired by the President last month, triggering widespread condemnation from the President's opponents.

In his opening remarks, the Senate Intelligence Committee's Democrat Vice Chairman Senator Mark Warner said the intelligence community must be able to operate outside of politics:

Trump announces pick to replaced fired FBI chief

Trump chooses Christopher Wray as new FBI Director

U.S. President Donald Trump has announced that he plans to pick former
federal prosecutor Christopher Wray to be the next director of the
FBI.

The announcement comes a day before former FBI chief James Comey is
set to field questions from lawmakers relating to the Trump
administration's alleged links with Moscow.

South Korea halts deployment of US missile defence system

South Korea's new president Moon Jae-In has suspended the deployment of THAAD - the American military's anti-missile defence system.

Germany to pull troops from Turkey following dispute

Germany's cabinet has approved a plan to relocate about two hundred eighty soldiers to Jordan from an air base in Turkey, following a dispute with the Turkish government.

German jets use the airbase for reconnaissance and refueling missions to support the anti-ISIS coalition in Iraq and Syria.

Italian police say they signalled one of the London attackers to MI5

Farmers protest turns violent in Madhya Pradesh, 6 dead in firing

Six farmers have been killed and eight injured in two separate incidents of firing in the Central Indian state of Madhya Pradesh.

It is unclear who fired the shots. While the police have denied doing it, the protesters claim that it was the police.

The farmers have been agitating demanding the government write off their farm loans.

New York Times: fired FBI Director asked US Attorney General never to be left alone with President Trump


According to a report in the New York Times, fired FBI Director James Comey asked US Attorney General Jeff Sessions to make sure he was never left alone with President Donald Trump.

Mr Comey was fired last month, since when reports have emerged that the President tried to influence the FBI's investigation into allegations of collusion between the Trump presidential campaign and Russia.

Trump call with Saudi king addresses terrorism


The White House says that President Trump had a call with Saudi King Salman to address the financing of terror organizations. 

This comes two days after Saudi Arabia and five of its allies announced they were severing ties with Qatar for its alleged support for terrorists.
