Emergency approval for Roche Zika test

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has given emergency approval for a test by Roche for the Zika virus.

The decision comes as the number of locally spread cases of Zika virus infection increases.

Scientists End Year-Long Mars Mission Simulation in Hawaii

A team of six scientists have completed a year-long simulation of a mission to Mars, living in nearly complete isolation in Hawaii.

Since 29th August last year, the group lived inside a dome on top of a mountain, and were only allowed outside if they were wearing space suits.

Zika virus in Singapore - alert issued by Australian government

The Australian government is urging pregnant women to avoid non-essential travel to Singapore, as the the city state records 41 cases of the Zika virus being locally transmitted.
Australia's Department of Foreign Affairs sent out a travel alert on Monday, warning of the ongoing spread of the virus and telling people to adopt additional measures against mosquito bites if planning a trip to Singapore.
This included deferring non-essential travel if pregnant and avoiding pregnancy for two months following your return.

Republicans defend Donald Trump over immigration policy

Senior Republicans have denied that Donald Trump has flip-flopped on his hardline anti-immigration stance.

In the past week the Republican nominee has appeared to soften his approach to immigration, suggesting that he might not deport eleven million illegal migrants as he'd previously promised.

However, in an interview on CNN's 'State of the Union', Republican Vice-Presidential nominee Mike Pence said Mr. Trump's immigration policy had not changed.

US warns Iran over naval incidents in Straits of Hormuz

The US Government is criticising Iran for several incidents in the Straits of Hormuz involving American and Iranian ships.

A US navy ship fired three warning shots in the direction of an Iranian Revolutionary Guard boat this week, after several US ships were approached by Iranian vessels.  

The Straits of Hormuz is a narrow and contested waterway linking the Arabian Sea with the Persian Gulf. White House spokesman Josh Earnest told reporters that the motives of the Iranians was unclear, but there were dangers that the situation could escalate.

Oscar Pistorius is serving a six-year jail term for the murder of his girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp, in 2013.

On Friday, a high court judge dismissed the petition by prosecutors who wanted a stiffer sentence for the double amputee athlete.

Prosecutors argued that Pistorius' six-year jail term for the crime of murder was shockingly too lenient.

But the Judge agreed with the defense team saying the legal process had been thoroughly exhausted and that their petition had no reasonable prospects of success.

The minimum sentence for murder in South Africa is 15 years.

Oscar Pistorius did not attend the Friday hearing.
