US wants to see how Russian withdrawal from Syria progresses

Russia will continue conducting air strikes in Syria, said Russian Deputy Defence Minister Nikolay Pankov, just one day after President Vladimir Putin announced some forces are coming home.

The news was welcomed by U.N. special envoy Staffan de Mistura, who is shepherding political talks in Geneva.

The U.S. remains skeptical, but U.S. State Department Spokesman John Kirby says the focus needs to be on bolstering political negotiations.

One suspect neutralized in Brussels counter-terror raids

One suspect has been neutralized following counter-terror raids by Belgian and French police in a southern neighborhood of Brussels.

Controversy Over Proposal to Resume Strikes Against Taliban

A senior American general has proposed resuming offensive strikes against the Taliban in Afghanistan. 
According to the Washington Post, senior Pentagon officials say General John F. Campbell forwarded his proposal directly to the White House, without the knowledge of the US Secretary of Defense.

White House: Obama and Putin Talk 'Next Steps' in Syria

In a surprise announcement Monday, Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered the withdrawal of most Russian troops from Syria beginning immediately, less than six months after Moscow's planes began bombarding forces fighting the Syrian government. The move prompted a call between US President Barack Obama and President Putin, who discussed next steps to implementing a ceasefire in the war-torn country.

Update: The president of the U.N. Security Council reports all 15 members view Russia's announcement that it is withdrawing most of its troops from Syria as "positive."
