Spanish socialist leader asked to form government

The King of Spain has asked socialist leader Pedro Sanchez to form a
government - six weeks after an inconclusive election.
The right wing Popular Party came first in the poll - but cannot
command enough support from other parties to rule.

ZIKA CASE 'TRANSMITTED SEXUALLY' IN US

A possible case of the Zika virus being transmitted through sex has been reported in the US.

An infected patient in Texas had not travelled to infected areas, but their partner had returned from Venezuela.

Zika is carried and primarily transmitted by mosquitoes and its spread has been declared a global health emergency by the World Health Organization.

It has been linked to the births of thousands of babies in South America with under-developed brains.

Dr Edward Wright, a virologist from the University of Westminster, says the focus should remain on those countries where the mosquitoes are present, rather than on the cases appearing further afield.

Refugee advocate slams Australia's high court decision that offshore detention is legal

Australia's High Court has ruled that the nation's offshore detention
regime at Nauru and Manus Island in Paua-New Guinea is lawful, dashing
the hopes of asylum seekers that detention centres would be closed and
they would be settled in Australia.
The full bench of the High Court on Wednesday ruled that the federal
government has the power under the constitution to detain people in
other countries, finding that the conduct was within the law.
Refugee advocate David Webb says the law didn't exist until the action
was brought against the government, and he says it may be legal, but
it's immoral.

Amazon 'To Launch Hundreds of Physical Bookshops'

E commerce giant Amazon is planning to open hundreds of physical bookshops - that's according to the Wall Street Journal.

The paper says the CEO of a large shopping mall mentioned Amazon's plans in a phone call with analysts about quarterly earnings.

US political attention on New Hampshire

The focus of the 2016 U.S. presidential nominating race has moved to New Hampshire, for the first in the nation primary.

The small state in the north east corner of the U.S. is known for it's lakes and trees and a population that's completely different from Iowa.

Speaking for the first time since coming in second at the Iowa Caucuses, Donald Trump predicted he'll win the New Hampshire primaries.

He lost to Ted Cruz, despite polls showing the businessman was ahead.

Donald Trump told reporters, it's possible skipping the final candidates  debate contributed to his second place finish, but he wouldn't change how he ran his campaign in Iowa.

Zika Case Transmitted by Sex Reported in Texas

A rare case of Zika virus infection transmitted by sex, rather than mosquito bite, has been reported in Texas. 

This case is the first known infection to take place in the mainland United States.
Although Texas has reported seven Zika cases all those patients reportedly contracted the virus while traveling abroad.

Obama to make first visit to US mosque Wednesday

US repeats call for immediate ceasefire in Syria

The U.S. is repeating its call for an immediate ceasefire in Syria, ahead of London Conference on Supporting Syria and the Region.

The conference comes as United Nations-mediated talks are underway in Geneva, Switzerland, aimed at getting the Assad regime and Syrian opposition talking.

In Washington, U.S. State Department spokesman John Kirby said, a ceasefire is not something that Washington and Moscow can negotiate, it just needs to happen.

Ministers set to sign Trans Pacific Partnership

Trade ministers from 12 Asia-Pacific nations are set to sign the Trans-Pacific Partnership, guaranteeing freer trade for about 26 percent of global exchange.

However, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell has told reporters, he has some problems with the massive trade pact.

At the White House, ahead of the expected signing, spokesman Josh Earnest acknowledged, final approval from the U.S. Congress is not set.

UN: World Health Organizaiton warns Zika outbreak could affect Asia and Africa

The World Health Organization announced plans to monitor the Zika
virus in Asia and Africa early this week, namely in countries with
high birth rates and poor health infrastructures.

The plan comes after the UN agency declared the virus to be an
international health emergency this Monday.

The White House is describing the proposed missile launch by North Korea as an irresponsible provocation.

Pyongyang has reportedly notified  the International Maritime Organization that a missile test will happen sometime in mid-February.

She beat Bernie Sanders by a very slim margin, with some caucus results determined by a coin toss.

Hezbollah members arrested on charges of using drug money to fund terrorism

Members of the militant group Hezbollah have been arrested on charges of using millions of dollars in drug money to fund terrorist activity in Syria and Lebanon.

Oil giant Exxon Mobil battles with low prices

The world's largest publicly traded oil company has announced it will
cut spending this year by 25 percent as it battles falling oil prices.

Exxon Mobil has released its earnings report and says that profits
