Obama: Immigrants make America strong

US President Barack Obama says the United States needs to remember its historical commitment to being a safe haven for refugees, and not give in to fear of immigrants.

Speaking at a naturalization ceremony for new US citizens, he said Syrians seeking asylum today are comparable to Jews who were trying to escape the Holocaust during the 1930s and 40s.

The President also encouraged Americans to stand up for Muslim immigrants facing stigmatization.

His comments came shortly after polls showed presidential hopeful Donald Trump's recent call to ban Muslims from crossing US borders have propelled him to new heights in support from voters.

Mr. Obama says the US is a nation founded by immigrants for immigrants. He says refugees make America stronger.
