More questions than answers about US policy on Syria

There are more questions than answers about the direction of U.S.  policy toward Syria following the announcement of the deployment of several dozen American Special forces.

At the same time - the Islamic State has reportedly taken control of the town of Maheen - which is 20 kilometers / 13 miles of the main road to Damascus.

UK POLICE FORCE JOKES ONLINE ABOUT RAPE

A UK police force has apologised after its official twitter account appeared to join in with an online joke about rape, in reference to an English Premier League game.

Merseyside Police says it has launched an investigation and has deleted the tweet in question.

Russian Official: Egypt Plane 'Broke Up In Mid Air'

A Russian aviation official has said that the plane that crashed in Egypt on Saturday, killing all 224 people on board, 'broke up in mid air'.

Viktor Sorochenko, who's the head of Russia's Interstate Aviation Committee, said it's too early to determine what caused the crash, but debris has been found across a 20 square kilometre area.

US labor market in focus: Wall Street preview

Last week the US Federal Reserve announced that it’s keeping interest rates unchanged but did leave the door open for a possible rate hike in December.

Russia Holds Day of National Mourning After Air Tragedy

Russia is holding a day of national mourning this Sunday to remember the 224 people who died on board a passenger jet which crashed in the Sinai desert in Egypt.

Russian Authorities Reject Claim That Sinai Plane Shot Down

The Russian transport minister has rejected claims by the Islamic State group that it was behind the crash of a passenger jet in the Sinai desert on Saturday, which killed all 224 people on board.


Maksim Sokolov said the claims couldn't be considered accurate.

Russian passenger jet crashes in Sinai

A passenger jet carrying 224 people crashed over the Sinai peninsula in Egypt. The airplane was traveling from the Red Sea resort of Sharm el Sheikh to the Russian city of Saint-Petersburg. Russia's sending out 5 airplanes with transport and emergency ministries officials as well as investigators to inspect the crash site. Daria Bondarchuk reports from Moscow.

UN Rapporteur says foreign nationals on death row abroad are most vulnerable

The UN Special Rapporteur on summary executions on Friday warned that hundreds of foreign nationals still face the death penalty around the world, following trials that may not meet the highest standards of fairness.


Christof Heyns called on governments to do more to help their citizens on death row abroad.

UK, France and Spain push for UN sanctions on Syria barrel bombs

Top Gear legal challenge reopened in Argentina

A criminal investigation into the BBC's Top Gear programme is being relaunched by a judge in Argentina.


During filming of the programme in Argentina, a number plate on a car being driven by former Top Gear presenter Jeremy Clarkson, appeared to make reference tot he 1982 Falklands War.


The move sparked widespread protest in the country and filming had to be abandoned, as our UK Correspondent Natalie Powell reports…

Talks on Syria to unite countries backing rival forces

International talks on Syria underway in Vienna, the Austrian capital, for the first time include Iran, which, along with Russia, backs the Syrian President Bashar al-Assad. On the second day the participants will meet in an extended format to discuss a political transition and possible solutions to the four-year-long civil conflict in Syria. While talks are unlikely to likely to find an immediate solution, the US Secretary of State John Kerry called them "the most promising opportunity for a political opening we have seen."
