FBI believes Kuwaiti-born attacker of military centres acted alone

Investigators in the United States are regarding a deadly shooting spree at two military centres in Tennessee as domestic terrorism.

More details are emerging about the shooter, who was born in Kuwait, but as our US correspondent John Clarke reports, no direct link has yet been found to any international terror groups.

German parliament backs 86 billion euro deal for Greece

The parliament in Germany has overwhelmingly backed the opening of negotiations on a third bailout deal for Greece.

German chancellor Angela Merkel had warned of predictable chaos in Greece were the Bundestag in Berlin to shoot down a deal agreed Monday after marathon talks in Brussels.

IMF rejects involvement in Greek bailout without debt restructuring

The International Monetary Fund has ruled out its invovlvement in the third bailout deal for Greece unless debt restructuring is part of the programme.

But some eurozone countries, especially Germany, are opposed to a writedown of the Greek debt.

MH17 memorial services held a year on

Memorial services are being held to mark the first year anniversary of the downing of Malaysia Airlines flight MH17 over Russian backed militant held territory in eastern Ukraine.


Among the ceremonies are those being held at the crash site by local villagers, in Australia which lost 39 of its citizens and in the Netherlands where most of the passengers were from.

Obama expresses deepest condolences for families of marines killed in Tennessee shooting

President Obama has expressed his deepest condolences to the families of four marines killed by a gunman in Tennessee.

The FBI has named the shooter as 24 year old Mohammad Youssuf Abdulazeez who is believed to have been born in Kuwait.

Speaking in the Oval Office, President Obama asked Americans to pray for the grief-stricken families.

Fed chair addresses US Senate

Jury finds Colorado Theater Shooter Guilty of Firs Degree Murder

The man whose shooting rampage three years ago killed 12 people and wounded 70 more inside a suburban Denver movie theater has been found guilty of first degree murder. 

Defense lawyers had argued James Holmes had a severe mental illness, while proscutors said Holmes planned the shooting spree.

Tennessee gunman reportedly identified as Muhammad Youssef Abdulazeez.

Reports say the gunman in the shooting of four marines at a Naval Reserve Center in Tennessee, has been identified as 24-year-old Muhammad Youssef Abdulazeez.

The suspected gunman is dead, according to local officials, while authorities investigate whether this was a terrorist attack.

Former President George H.W. Bush hospitalized after fall

EU warns of increasing tensions between Russian and Russia over South Ossetia

The EU has warned of increasing tensions between Russia and Georgia amid claims Russian troops have redrawn a section of the border with breakaway region South Ossetia.


Moscow has deployed troops in the Georgian region since it fought a war with Tbilisi over the territory in 2008.

Mexico increases its efforts to re-capture El Chapo


Mexican officials say they have deployed 10,000 police officers in an effort to re-capture the country's most infamous drug lord, Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman.

Financing Bridge for Greece agreed in principle

Eurozone leaders have agreed in principle to use the ESFM emergency fund to bridge Greece's financing gap, until the country's third bailout comes through.


It comes after Greece voted to impose austerity measures in return for funds.

The UK Government is launching a consultation review of the BBC corporation, known as a Green paper, to lay out the issues that need to be discussed when considering the broadcaster's future.

The British government announced thorough review of BBC ahead of charter renewal



The British government has set out its intention to conduct a thorough review of the operations of the BBC, the British Broadcasting Corporation, as the broadcaster negotiates the renewal of its charter in 2016. 

Culture Secretary John Whittingdale launched a consultation paper on the corporation's future with questions including how the BBC  is funded, whether its programmes cater for all tastes and if it stifles competition from other media. 

The paper will also investigate alternatives to the BBC licence fee, something every person with a television is forced to pay for whether they watch the BBC or not.

A public consultation will now follow.
