Obama poised for congressional battle over authorization for IS war

U.S. President Barack Obama is poised to ask Congress to authorize his war against Islamic State militants in Iraq and Syria.

Barack Obama has so far been relying on presidential war powers invoked by President George W Bush after the September 11th 2001 terror attacks on the U.S.

But critics say Congressional authorization for this president's war is long overdue- and not at all certain.

Briton who joined jihadi training camp jailed for 12 years

A British jihadist who fled to Syria and joined a militant group with links to the Islamic state has been jailed for 12 years.

Julian Assange policing costs reach 10m pounds


The cost of providing around-the-clock policing for Wikileaks founder Julian Assange has reached 10 million pounds (over 15 million dollars).


Mr Assange has been holed up in London's Ecuadorean embassy since August 2012 after being granted asylum, over fears that he could be extradited to the US to face charges relating to the release of top secret documents.

PricewaterhouseCoopers accused of promoting "industrial scale" tax avoidance

British accountancy firm PricewaterhouseCoopers has been accused of promoting tax avoidance on an industrial scale in a report by MPs. 

It is said to have helped hundreds of clients cut their corporation tax bills by setting up bases in Luxembourg.

MERKEL, HOLLANDE PUSH FOR PEACE IN MOSCOW

French President Francois Hollande and German Chancellor Angela Merkel are in Moscow for talks with President Vladimir Putin on Ukraine.

They've traveled to Russia after discussions in Ukraine's capital Kiev centred around a new peace plan.

The new round of diplomacy comes amid intensified fighting in eastern Ukraine.

The US is also considering supplying defensive weapons to Kiev to fight rebels in the east.

Russia denies claims it is arming pro-Russian separatists, or that it has troops fighting alongside rebels in the Donetsk and Luhansk regions.

Christopher Miller of Mashable is in eastern Ukraine and says there isn't much optimism.

UN report says IS is killing, torturing, raping children in Iraq

The United Nations says the extremist group, Islamic State is systematically killing, torturing and raping children and families of minority groups in Iraq.

US urges diplomatic solution to Ukraine crisis

The Obama administration continues to urge a diplomatic resolution to the Ukraine crisis, even as Congressional lawmakers urge sending lethal arms to Kiev.

While in Kiev, U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry placed the blame for the violence in eastern Ukraine squarely at the feet of Russian President Vladimir Putin.

And despite an agreement reached last year in Minsk, White House spokesman Josh Earnest says those efforts are faltering, but more diplomacy is needed.

New peace effort underway for Ukraine

Ukraine's President Petro Poroshenko and Prime Minister Arseny Yatsenyuk have been meeting with US Secretary of State John Kerry for talks on peace effort for Ukraine.


An offensive by Russian backed militants in the east of the country has lead to mounting civilian and military casualties, the shelling of residential areas and has forced thousands for flee from their homes.



Prime Minister Yatsenyuk says that Ukraine wants peace but will not give up its territorial integrity.

KERRY SAYS MOSCOW IS TERRORIZING UKRAINE, ANNOUNCES MORE AID

Speaking from Kiev, US Secretary of State John Kerry expressed concern that the violence in Eastern Ukraine is accelerating, as Russian troops terrorize the area. 

Mr. Kerry accused Moscow of lying about the supplies and equipment it is bringing over the border - saying the US has aerial evidence of the presence of tanks, rockets, troops, and "instruments of death."

The Secretary announced another 16 and a half million dollars in aid to Ukraine - monetary assistance he says is to be used specifically to help civilians in the war-torn East of the country.

He said that brings US financial aid in Ukraine up to 355 million dollars, in addition to two separate loan guarantees of one billion dollars each.

US Secretary of State John Kerry says Moscow is to blame for the continuing violence.

IMF announces debt relief for Ebola-stricken countries

The International Monetary Fund is providing $100 million in debt relief for the three nations most affected by the Ebola outbreak.

After weeks of declines, the World Health Organization announced that Ebola cases were back on the rise, just as the United Nations reported that only about 40% of aid was reaching Guinea, Liberia and Sierre Leone.

IMF Managing Director Christine LaGarde said this debt relief package is a departure from their usual policy of granting loans.
